Strictly’s Will Mellor is unrecognisable in first ever TV stint as child star

Strictly Come Dancing contestant Will Mellor, who is competing in the 2022 series, looks completely unrecognisable in his first television role.

The actor has starred in some big name productions such as Hollyoaks, Broadchurch and EastEnders, but the star started his humble beginnings on CITV, ITV’s children’s channel.

Mellor’s role came on Children’s Ward, which was set in a fictional hospital and aimed at kids – like a children's version of Casualty.

The show followed the ups and downs of life in the hospital and some huge celebrities starred on the show, including Mellor, fellow EastEnders icon Danny Dyer and Coronation Street’s Tina O’Brien.

Will took to the stage as Ben Rowlingson back in 1990 and starred in the CITV production for five episodes.

Mellor would have been roughly 14-years-old at the time of filming and looked considerably different from how we know him today.

In an unearthed picture, Will wore a bright red top surrounded by fellow kids wearing the same uniform.

He had short hair that had been spiked up in the front, but still had the distinctive features we know and love him for today.

Children’s Ward was just the start of his acting career as he went on to land a role on Hollyoaks as James “Jambo” Bolton five years later.

He played the character from 1995 to 1998 and came back to the soap to reprise his role back in 2004.

The 46-year-old eventually moved on from his stint on the show and set his sights on a music career.

He covered Leo Sayer’s When I Need You, which successfully charted at number five in the UK, but quickly turned his career path back to acting.

In 2001, he returned to his roots and starred in medical drama Casualty from 2001 to 2003 as Jack Vincent.

Throughout his career, he also played Gaz Wilkinson on Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, guest character Warren Stamp in EastEnders back in 2007 and Harvey Gaskell in Coronation Street throughout 2021.

Smaller roles during his acting career include parts in Line of Duty, Death in Paradise and Broadchurch.
