US politician Nancy Pelosi visits Corrie to discuss Nina hate crime storyline

Coronation Street stars David Neilson and Mollie Gallagher welcomed some very special guests to the cobbles.

The meeting came as part of the G7 Speakers’ Conference, hosted by Speaker of the House of Commons Sir Lindsay Hoyle who invited his global counterparts, including speaker of the House of Representatives in the US Nancy Pelosi, to visit the set of the famous soap to discuss its hate crime storyline.

Fans of the soap will remember the heartbreaking scenes featuring Nina Lucas and Seb Franklin (Harry Visinoin) as they were targeted in an unprovoked attack. Seb died from his injuries in hospital.

The actress, who plays Nina was joined by David, who plays Nina’s uncle Roy Cropper, on set in Salford to talk about the award winning plot – based on the real life murder of Sophie Lancaster in 2007.

There was a panel discussion about how television can be a powerful tool to influence people’s lives across the world.

Sir Lindsay told PA: ‘So when we send out that message from this street, we know that others will learn from it and that’s why today has been so important and that’s why that storyline is so, so important.

‘There is no way that hate should not be called out, we’ve got to stand firm, we’ve got to stand together and we’ve got to make sure that storylines like this do not happen.’

He stressed that ‘we should be able to accpet other people’s looks, views’.

‘Hate is not what I want to see in this country’, he added.

The G7 Speakers’ Conference involved politicians from the US, Japan, France, Canada, Germany, Italy and the European Parliament.
