Wayne Lineker sparks uproar over awkward Holly Willoughby dating chat ‘Why give air time?’

Celebs Go Dating: Wayne Lineker discusses appearing on show

Wayne, 58, is set to feature in the brand-new series of E4 reality show Celebs Go Dating where he is hoping to find someone he can have a relationship with. Late last year, the Ibiza club owner posted on Instagram a list of criteria he felt a woman would have to meet before dating them, stating the ages of around 28 to 29 would work. Curious to find out why, This Morning presenter Holly Willoughby, 39, dug a little deeper and looked less than impressed with the response he gave.

Asked by Holly and Phillip Schofield, 58, on why he wanted to take part in the dating show, Wayne explained he did want to find the right person.

The guest said: “My family are very concerned about me because when I’m single I tend to get carried away.

“I want to settle down and I don’t want to have this crazy lifestyle,” he added, before talking about the type of person he would be in a relationship.

“I’m a very trustworthy person. I’ve never cheated on a girl in my life,” the club owner said.

With the reality television series having been filmed late last year within the confines of a mansion, Wayne revealed he has changed his mind about the age of the woman he would like to be with.

As Holly referred to the Instagram post in which he wrote he would like to be with someone closer to the age of 30, she asked him if he was “broadening that range”.

Wayne replied: “For me personally, even though there would still be a large age gap, between 30 and 45 would be the ideal age for me now.”

Intrigued by the guest’s admission, the mother-of-three jumped in as she asked: “What’s wrong with women your own age?”

“I couldn’t rule it out but I guess everyone has their own attractions, don’t they?” the club owner replied.

“Every pot has a lid,” Phillip added, but those watching at home didn’t seem too pleased with the interview taking place.

One viewer wrote: “Does Wayne Lineker think he’s some sort of catch?! #thismorning,” with a second posting: “Was this Wayne guy looking for some sort of sympathy? #ThisMorning.”

A third commented: “Wayne Lineker doesn’t come across very well does he? #ThisMorning,” as a fourth shared: “Why give Wayne Lineker air time? Shallow aspirations #ThisMorning.”

“Can’t believe we are talking to Wayne Lineker about his dating preferences #thismorning,” a fifth declared.

Wayne won’t be the only famous face looking for love in the new series of Celebs Go Dating, which begins tonight.

For the first time ever, the all-stars are being put under the same roof and watched 24/7 as they interact with their love interests.

Joining the club owner in the mansion will be former Strictly Come Dancing star Karim Zeroual, 27, and Love Island contestant Curtis Pritchard, 24.

Ex-Coronation Street actress Kimberley Hart-Simpson, 34, is also going to be participating alongside Made in Chelsea star Sophie Hermann, 33.

Completing the line-up is Geordie Shore star Chloe Ferry, 25, and internationally renowned DJ Tom Zanetti, 31.

Speaking of joining the agency for the first time, Wayne said: “After being single for over two years, I am so ready to meet somebody I can hopefully spark a romance with.

“I’ve heard great things about the agency, and that Anna [Williamson], Paul [Carrick Brunson] and Tom [Read Wilson] give sound advice.

“I’m excited to see the potential dates that the agents bring to the table, and hopefully learn a few things about myself along the way.”

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV. Celebs Go Dating airs weeknights at 9pm on E4.
