After Life is the emotional comedy-drama from the mind of actor and writer Ricky Gervais. The Netflix series has pulled at subscribers’ heartstrings for the past few years and now it’s time to say goodbye for good. However, not everyone is back for the third series as one of its cast members is missing from all the action.

Why isn’t the Psychiatrist in After Life season 3?

For the first two seasons of After Life, actor Paul Kaye portrayed Tony (played by Ricky Gervais) and then Matt’s (Tom Basden) psychiatrist.

Whenever he was onscreen, he was crass, self-absorbed and seemed to care very little about how his patients were feeling.

Most of the time, he ended up talking about himself and his own problems.

While fans enjoyed these scenes starring the Game of Thrones star, it doesn’t appear the psychiatrist is going to be in After Life this time around.

An exact reason why actor Kaye doesn’t star in After Life season three hasn’t been given.

But there could be a few possibilities as to why he wasn’t able to film the last series.

First of all, there has been a massive gap between the release dates of series two and three.

Season two came out in 2020 but, like with many other shows, the coronavirus pandemic has caused major delays.

With filming forced to be postponed, this may have altered Kaye’s schedule as he has commitments to other shows.

So the creators could have been forced to write the psychiatrist out as Kaye wasn’t available for filming.

Since After Life began, he has also featured in The Stranger, The Third Day, The Watch and Beforeigners.

There is one particular show that likely took up a lot of his time since 2021.

Since 2019, Kaye has portrayed Dr Malcolm Donahue in the ITV drama Vera, alongside actress Brenda Blethyn.

Thanks to the pandemic, only part of series 11 could be filmed early last year and so the cast and crew had to continue filming after the first two episodes aired.

This probably took a lot of Kaye’s time and therefore could have played a part in him not returning to After Life.

Nevertheless, the show must go on as the heartbreaking yet uplifting story comes to a close.

Local journalist Tony is still struggling with the loss of his wife Lisa (Kerry Godliman) who died of cancer prior to series one.

He is still trying his best to have a different attitude to life and has got the death of his dad to contend with now too.

The trailer shows him going to different places to scatter his ashes, including inside a pub which the owner is far from happy with.

After Life seasons 1-3 are available to watch on Netflix.
