Wim Hof has helped people all over the world transform their lives with his unique techniques and perspectives. But now he has opened up about how his own journey began with a tragedy that has always driven him to want to help others.
In the first episode of Holly Willoughby’s brand new BBC Series Freeze The Fear with Wim Hof, the Dutch motivational speaker is frank about losing his first wife, Olaya, and how it changed his life and path forever.
The 62 year old tells the celebrity line-up taking part how he wanted to become a “better man” after Olaya kissed their children goodnight before taking her own life.
“I could not help my wife but now I can help not millions but billions of people,” he said as he reflected on the traumatic time.
Discussing how he’s doing exactly that in the new BBC series, Wim, who is much-loved with celebrities for his cold water therapy technique, added: “It’s a great window into the world and the world needs it right now.
“There’s too much confusion and too much depression, anxiety and darkness. But we can make it go away when we face our fears.”
The star also recently spoke about his choice to start using cold water therapy, as it helped him feel calm and still following his huge loss.
He has explained: “I truly realised the benefit of the cold when I was grieving the death of my wife, Olaya, in 1995.”
Wim went on to say: “She had depression and had spiralled into darkness.
“I was left alone with four kids to look after and no money, dealing with the deep emotional agony and yet needing to be strong for my children.
“It was devastating. The children made me survive but it was the cold that brought me back to life. It healed me.
“Instead of being guided by my broken emotions, the cold water led me to stillness and gave my broken heart a chance to rest, restore, rehabilitate.”

He added: "That is the message I want to share. This is what I found.
“I want to share the love. I don’t want anyone else to be in the same stressful situation that I was left behind in.”
