A giant elephant has been spotted on the loose in southern Italy after escaping from a circus. 

Surprising footage shows the big-eared giant heading for a supermarket in Calabria as it strolls along a busy road surrounded by mountains. 

A person filming from their car can be heard laughing and saying: ‘He’s going for a stroll. 

‘An elephant at the Eurospin [supermarket]!’ 

Local media reported that the elephant broke free from a local circus and has since been returned, according to the BBC.

Discussing the animal’s adventure, one person wrote on Twitter: ‘Brilliant.’ 

Another said: ‘How fun.’

The elephant’s escape comes just days after a wild animal initially believed to be a lioness was on the loose in Berlin, Germany, with more than 220 police officers armed with guns sent to hunt the creature. 

But the search was soon called off after Germany admitted the missing mammal was actually a wild boar. 

Authorities determined that there is ‘no acute danger’ to people in Kleinmachnow on the edge of Berlin where a potentially dangerous animal was spotted, saying they no longer believe that a lioness is at large and calling off the hunt.

A search turned up no sign of such a predator and experts who analysed a video have concluded that it was likely a wild boar, they said.
