Peru has the highest Covid death rate in the world with more than 6,000 per million losing their lives to the deadly virus, according to new figures.

Some 199,632 have died during the pandemic in the country of 32.97million people, nearly doubly the proportion of the next worst affected country (3,256 deaths per million).

The pandemic has had a wildly uneven effect on different countries across the world, with China — where the virus originated — only recording 30 deaths per million people.

In comparison, Britain is the 24th worst affected country in the world, with 2,047 per million dying, while the US is the 20th (2,161 per million).

Not all countries accurately report the amount of Covid victims they have seen and deaths attributed to the virus vary in how they are counted.

Peru

Peru has recorded a total of 199,632 Covid deaths since the start of the pandemic, the sixth highest in the world.

This high figure has come despite the country only recording 2,182,106 cases, meaning the virus killed 9.14 per cent of people who tested positive in the country.

Some 12.3million people have now been vaccinated in Peru — 37.9 per cent of the population. 

Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina has the second highest Covid death rate in the world 3,259 per million falling victim to the virus.

Some 10,833 have died in the country, which has recorded 239,400 cases. 

North Macedonia

North Macedonia has the third highest death rate with 3,256 per million dying.

Officials say 194,231 have been infected by the virus in total, with 6,799 dying since March last year.

Montenegro

The fourth worst affected country in the world is Montenegro, which has a death rate of around 3,141 per million.

Around 472,623 have been vaccinated in the country, which has seen 134,602 cases. 

Hungary 

Hungary has the fifth highest death rate, with 3,117 per million dying with the virus.

Some 30,259 have died in total with 826,636 official cases recorded in the country.

Asia

Cases have been falling in countries across Asia in recent weeks.

The only exception to the downward trend has been Singapore, which is currently seeing a sharp rise.

Despite cases falling more recently in India, the country has a death toll of more than 450,000 — the third highest in the world — and has had nearly 34million cases — second only to the US.
