Promising footballer, 20, stabbed to death at house party promoted on social media as teenager, 18, charged with murder | The Sun

A TEEN has been charged with murder after a promising footballer was stabbed to death at a house party on Thursday.

Ashley Day, 20, was fatally knifed at a flat in Digbeth, Birmingham, at around 6am that morning.

His family described him as a "well-mannered and loving boy" and a "model son" who "excelled" for Newport County's Academy.

In a touching tribute, they said: "He had a great love for music. He'd just been accepted to study sports science at Brunel University and was very excited to start later this year.

"He was a great big brother and protector to his mum, younger brother, and his family.

"Anyone who knew him will tell you how he exuded joy and happiness and always wanted the best for everybody."

Cops confirmed that 18-year-old Gurveer Bhandal had been charged with Ashley's murder, as well as possession of a bladed article.

Investigators understand that the flat where the attack took place was being used for a party, which had been advertised on social media.

Detective Inspector Jim Mahon, of West Midlands Police, said: "We are supporting Ashley's family at this awful time.

"While we have now charged a man with this murder, we believe there may still be people who may have information, photographs or videos of the party and incident.
