Wrexham FC’s Hollywood star owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney sent messages of support to Wales fans after their World Cup exit.

The pair reached out to heartbroken Welsh fans after being thrashed 0-3 by England – and letting the USA go through.

TV star McElhenney said a heartfelt goodbye to his now second home.

He tweeted after the game: ‘Wales is going home. But at least they get to go home to Wales. Diolch and see you soon!’

Co-owner Ryan Reynolds also got involved by liking a tweet from Wrexham AFC’s executive director, Humphrey Kerr.

It said: ‘Cymru will come again and at Wrexham-AFC we are going to do everything we can to help improve the development of North Walian footballing talent in the future.’

Wales needed to win against England if they were to qualify for the knockout stages of the World Cup, but instead were sent home after the Three Lions team scored three goals in the second half of the match.

Dejected fans were seen consoling each other after the bruising in Qatar. 

It was the Dragons’ first World Cup since 1958. 

The pair were given the Dragon Award from the Welsh Government for rescuing the troubled team for their hit TV series.

The Dragon Award is for promoting Wales and Welsh culture on a global stage – and Ryan spoke Welsh to declare ‘Cymru am byth!’ as they accepted it for their contribution to Wales’ culture in New York.

Deadpool star Reynolds and McElhenney, who starred in TV hit It Always rains in Philadelphia bought Wrexham AFC, the world’s third-oldest professional football club, in February 2021.

Both Reynolds and McElhenney have been praised locally for their efforts to engage with the local community and also respect the club’s tradition.

Meanwhile, their TV series Welcome to Wrexham has won fans around the world.

Reynolds secretly wore a Wrexham hat in the trailer for his latest Deadpool movie.

The comedy pair documented their journey into buying the North Wales club with documentary series Welcome to Wrexham – and the club reported a huge boost in replica gear sales.

Wrexham AFC said sales of merchandise, including shirts, had gone from £59,000 a year to £360,000 in the past 12 months.
