For most people, footwear hasn't been very exciting in a long time. Over the last year, comfort has reigned supreme when it comes to getting dressed. We've swapped work pants for sweatpants, button-ups for hoodies, and briefcases for weighted blankets. Our shoe game has gone casual, too: Fuzzy house slippers and low-key sneakers have become more ubiquitous than ever. The mere thought of wearing actual shoes — like with a heel and exposed feet and everything! — is, well, downright overwhelming.

Whether we like it or not, summer shoe season is quickly approaching, which means it's time to retire those cozy house slips and trade them in for some footwear that will really turn heads. One of the best parts of summer dressing is getting to experiment with playful silhouettes, funky textures, and vibrant colors and prints. This is the perfect time to go all-out with your wardrobe, and your shoe choices should be no different.

For those of us who haven't worn heels since 2019 (hi, it's me), the main challenge is just going to be getting comfortable in different styles again. If sneakers have been your go-to for a while, try transitioning into summer footwear with a chic kitten heel or a bold block heel. These styles tend to be a bit more forgiving in terms of comfort and walkability, so you can slowly ease your way back into the world of real shoes.

Once you feel good about those styles, you'll be ready to kick things up a notch with striking stilettos or sky-high wedges. These will — literally and figuratively — elevate any look, whether you're keeping it relaxed in jeans and a T-shirt or getting more dolled up in a maxi dress. To ensure as much comfort as possible, get some padded inserts that can provide more support.
