Ahead of the Together at Christmas carol service at Westminster Abbey on Thursday, December 15, Princess Kate planted a tree in honour of the late monarch. Pictures of the royal doing so were released earlier this week. She looked stunning in a long, tartan coat, which was very similar to a coat worn by Meghan a few years ago. However, an expert claimed it is unlikely Kate was trying to copy her sister-in-law, and instead was opting for an environmentally-friendly look.
Kate’s coat was a dark green and navy-blue tartan print coat, which was perfect for an outdoor occasion.
Costing £749, it was by British brand Holland Cooper and called the Blackwatch Tartan Coat. The brand described it on its website as a “longline sophisticated wool coat” with a more-relaxed silhouette than some of our super-fitted tailoring”.
It added: “Perfect to layer with a classic tee or styled with our super-chunky knitwear. Made from the finest UK woven wools, this coat has been hand cut and proudly made in England.”
The coat reached Kate’s shins and had an open collar and gold buttons on the sleeves and on either side of the coat’s opening.

Kate paired it with a wool turtleneck jumper and a pair of suede, high knee boots.
But Kate is not the first royal to wear a tartan coat like this one. In 2018, Meghan Markle stepped out in a very similar garment.
The Duchess of Sussex wore a Burberry tartan print coat in Edinburgh. She was in the Scottish capital as part of a visit with Prince Harry in February 2018.
Called the Double Breasted Tartan coat, Meghan’s coat was very similar to Kate’s in length and in cut, but with black, not gold, buttons.
Meghan’s coat is no longer in stock, but it was described on Net-A-Porter’s website as “luxurious” and cost £1,995.
The fashion website said: “Burberry’s SS18 Black Watch tartan coat is imbued with the house’s heritage.
“It’s crafted in Italy from a luxurious double-faced wool and cashmere-blend to a sharp, long-line double-breasted silhouette that’s finished with wide peak lapels and a slanted chest ticket pocket.”
Celebrity stylist Miranda Holder commented on Kate and Meghan’s similar coats, saying: “Kate Middleton looked polished and refined as she stepped out in a breathtaking Holland Cooper double breasted coat.
“The silhouette was perfect for her, and in true Kate signature style came in at the waist and had volume on the bottom half, balancing out her lovely broad shoulders.
“The coat was incredibly similar to a Burberry piece in the same tartan pattern that Meghan has been seen wearing.”
Although Kate’s version seemed to be replica of Meghan’s, Miranda claimed that the Princess’ didn’t take inspiration from the Duchess.
She said: “This was no attempt on Kate’s part to emulate the Duchess of Sussex.
“This Holland Cooper coat was a rewear for the Princess – something we are seeing more and more of.
“It is in line with the environmentally friendly ethos of Earthshott, Prince William’s charity and the motivation behind their most recent American tour.
“Kate also has a similar piece in the same tartan in a much shorter style, so has been wearing this tartan long before Meghan came onto the scene.”
Kate also wore the coat back in November 2021 to film a short clip about the Remembrance with the Royal British Legion and the Scouts.
