The Giants are not in the playoffs and not drafting in the top 10.

A six-win season improved the Giants to NFL middle ground and the reward is the No. 11 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, along with a schedule against other second-place division finishers next season.

The Giants’ first pick of the first round hasn’t been this far from the top since 2017, when they selected Pro Bowl tight end Evan Engram at No. 23. The Giants have drafted running back Saquon Barkley (No. 2), quarterback Daniel Jones (No. 6) and left tackle Andrew Thomas (No. 4) since then, though they also picked defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence (No. 17) and cornerback DeAndre Baker (No. 30) after trades in 2019.

The last time the Giants picked No. 11 was in 2000, when they selected Heisman Trophy-winning running back Ron Dayne to team up with Tiki Barber in the “Thunder and Lightning” backfield.

The Giants, Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers all finished with 6-10 records. The Cowboys will pick No. 10 and the 49ers will pick No. 12 with the Giants sandwiched in between based on the combined winning percentage of opponents faced in 2020.

The Philadelphia Eagles will pick No. 6 after securing a last-place NFC East finish with tanking-suspect coaching in a loss to Washington that eliminated the Giants from playoff contention. Washington will pick no higher than No. 19, with final draft position based on when its playoff run ends.

The Giants have used their highest draft pick on offense four straight years – since cornerback Eli Apple in 2016 – but still count wide receiver among the biggest needs. Pass-rusher also is high on the list.
