Tom Brady and Julian Edelman forged one of the closest bonds in the NFL during their 11 years together in New England, winning three Super Bowls, coining the league’s most notable bromance and taking on the 2019 Met Gala.  

So when the Patriots receiver announced his retirement from the NFL after New England terminated his contract under the failed physical designation, the Buccaneers quarterback posted a heartfelt message on Instagram Monday.

“On the biggest stage and in the biggest moments, you always came through,” Brady wrote. “I was a witness to so much of the journey and am so proud of you and how you grew from 7th round underdog to an older 7th round underdog. 

“You have so many teammates that admired your work ethic and will to win, and I am at the top of the list because when I was down and feeling sorry for myself at times, you were right there to pick me up. You were as tough as could be and I love you for all that you did to make our teams as great as they could possibly be.”

Edelman, who finished his career with 6,822 yards and 36 touchdown receptions, has always compared his relationship with Brady to being like brothers. He was quick to congratulate Brady on his seventh Super Bowl title when he won in his first season with Tampa Bay.

“7 rings, can’t stop won’t stop,” Edelman wrote. “The best ever in all sports.”

During their time together, Edelman caught 571 passes from Brady, which is the most completions that Brady has thrown to any one receiver. One of Edelman’s most memorable NFL moments came in Super Bowl LII, when he was named MVP after catching 10 passes for 151 yards in the win over the Rams.

But arguably his most iconic moment came in the Patriots’ 34-28 Super Bowl win over Atlanta, when he somehow made a catch on a tipped pass during the fourth quarter. Edelman finishes his career with the second-most playoff receptions (118) and receiving yards (1,442) in NFL history, behind Jerry Rice.

Brady didn’t just pay tribute to how Edelman performed in the playoffs, but what it was like for him to watch him off the field as well.

“Seeing you become a dad and the changes you made in your life made me so encouraged and happy for you,” Brady wrote. “Life is about gratitude and perspective! I am so happy for you and your family. You had an amazing football journey, an amazing life journey in New England, and I have no doubt you will succeed in anything you choose to do next!”
