Is American Horror Story Hotel based on Cecil Hotel?

Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel is a new documentary series exploring the eerie goings on at the notorious budget hotel.

The highly-anticipated series landed on Netflix in February 2021 and true crime documentary fans have been eager for some insight into the history of murders.

The series hails from the creator of The Ted Bundy Tapes and it shows how the hotel became a backdrop for some of the most heinous crimes.

American Horror Story season five, known as Hotel, did in fact take inspiration from the true story behind Cecil Hotel.

AHS Hotel became a fan-favourite in the anthology series and it focuses on Hotel Cortez.

The hotel is haunted by the spirits of those who saw their demise there, with many having taken their own lives.

The guests turn into ghosts or vampires who are looked after by the hotel staff.

AHS Hotel portrays the story in a more glamorous light, when in fact the real events that inspired the series were much darker.

Cecil Hotel was originally built for business travellers, but after the Great Depression it became a hotspot for drug-use.

The hotel has seen at least 16 different mysterious events, including deaths and paranormal experiences.

Some of America’s most notorious serial killers stayed at the hotel and the first reported suicide case was in 1931.

The events that followed led to the hotel being known as the most haunted in LA.

The tragic events set the framework for the fictional Hotel Cortez in American Horror Story.

Fans have taken to Twitter having made the connection, with one saying: “I have been reading a little bout the Cecil Hotel. Apparently it’s very haunted and a few serial killers even stayed there. The Hotel season on American horror story is supposed to be loosely based on The Cecil.”
