James Bond: Pierce Brosnan stars in Die Another Day 2002 trailer

The race to become the next James Bond is on, and all eyes are on a number of British actors. Daniel Craig is due to star in his swan song 007 movie, No Time To Die, in April of this year – but beyond that, the the next actor to become Bond is anyone’s guess. At the moment, Netflix star Regé-Jean Page is supremely popular with viewers. The actor is on a lot of people’s lips after starring in period drama Bridgerton, and it could be his ticket to claim the legendary role.

The British heartthrob has leapfrogged a number of the Bond favourites in less than a month.

After Bridgerton aired on Christmas Day last month, his odds have now skyrocketed to 5/1, pushing past the likes of Tom Hardy, and Idris Elba.

The 31-year-old has remained silent on these odds so far, but has now responded to claims he could be the next international man of mystery.

Appearing on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Page explained: “I think the internet thinks a lot of things, and that is one of the better ones!”

Page continued: “If you’re a Brit and you do something of any kind of renown that people regard well, people are going to start saying the ‘B’ word.”

Despite this, he beamed: “It’s like a merit badge! I’m very glad to have the badge.

“I’m very glad to be in the company of such people whop have the badge, but it’s just a badge.”

Despite these aversions to the topic, Fallon was keen to give his approval to the fancasting.

Regé-Jean joins a collection of iconic British actors in the running to take on the mantle of 007.

According to Ladbrokes, Page has now overtaken a collection of stars who have been favourites for the past year.

Just behind Page is Jack Lowden, with an incredible 8/1, and Game of Thrones star Richard Madden at 7/1.

2020’s biggest newcomer into the odds was Outlander hero Sam Heughan, who now has a strong 6/1 on becoming the second-ever Scottish Bond.

James Norton has 9/4 while Tom Hardy sits firm at 7/4, both of which are just ahead of the hero that is Idris Elba, who claims a 4/1.

Although Page is a little young to take on the role, former James Bond director Michael Apted stated that the franchise needed to continue changing to stay relevant.

The director explained in an interview in 2012: “As the actor changes, so the series changes.”

He added: “It does change. If it was the same thing I don’t think it would have survived so long, if they had stuck to the same set of principles.”

Apted went on to say: “This current Bond is almost nothing like the Bond I did – I think that’s terrific – and I think the tone will change again.”

Apted tragically died over the weekend, aged 79-years-old.

He was best known for directing the 1997 Bond movie The World Is Not Enough.

James Bond No Time To Die is due for release on April 2, 2021.
