A WHITE House deputy press secretary and First Lady Melania Trump’s chief of staff were among aides who resigned on Wednesday over violent riots by MAGA fans.
In a statement, White House Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Matthews expressed disapproval of protests that President Donald Trump's supporters held at the US Capitol to stop Congress from certifying President-elect Joe Biden's win.
“As someone who worked in the halls of Congress I was deeply disturbed by what I saw today,” Matthews said in a statement obtained by Fox News on Wednesday night.
“I’ll be stepping down from my rope, effective immediately. Our nation needs a peaceful transfer of power.”
Matthews also said, “I was honored to serve in the Trump administration and proud of the policies we enacted.”
Earlier, on Wednesday afternoon, Grisham submitted her resignation over the riots and her departure was also effective immediately.
Grisham left in protest of the riots, and as many mid-level aides resigned while being torn between fear of leaving the administration and a desire to oppose their boss, according to people with knowledge on the conversations.
In a tweet on her resignation on Wednesday night, Grisham said "it has been an honor to serve the country in the @WhiteHouse."
"I am very proud to have been a part of @FLOTUS @MELANIATRUMP mission to help children everywhere," Grisham continued, referring to the "Be Best" campaign focused on the well-being of youth.
Grisham wrote she was "proud of the many accomplishments of this Administration," and concluded, "Signing off now – you can find me at @OMGrisham."
One of the longest serving Trump administration officials, Grisham worked as Melania Trump’s chief of staff and spokeswoman.
Grisham previously served as the White House Press Secretary and the president's communications director.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Sun on Wednesday night.
Grisham's resignation came as a mob of Trump supporters descended on the Capitol building to stop Congress from certifying President-elect Joe Biden's victory.
Inside the Capitol on Wednesday afternoon, a woman was shot and taken out of the building in a stretcher as she bled, and died hours later.
The violent protests caused Congress members to halt Electoral College vote count.
It is not clear when lawmakers will resume the certification.
Grisham reportedly has a close relationship to the first lady but had previously considered leaving the White House.
In recent months, Grisham said she wanted to live closer to her family in the Midwest.
She apparently clashed with some members of the West Wing.
Grisham's relationship with the Trumps began in 2015 when she handled press for Donald Trump as he campaigned to be president.
Within the Trump administration, she first worked as deputy press secretary under then-Press Secretary Sean Spicer.
In March 2017, Melania Trump recruited her onto her staff.
Grisham became the president's press secretary in May 2019, and simultaneously served as White House communications director, while continuing her existing roles with the first lady.
Throughout her time as press secretary, Grisham never held an on-camera press conference.
